I built this piece for Waits River Valley School in Vermont with support from The Vermont Council on the Arts, sculptor Andrea Wasserman, and artist and art teacher Joanne Owen. The ceramics that make up the towers and the designs embedded in the bench bases were made by the students. The stones that make up the benches were donated by the community. The designs on the insides of the benches represent objects that the students associate with their school; the outsides are adorned with images they associate with the ecosystem that surrounds the school. The towers, evened out with asphalt and brick micro-masonry bands, break the regularity of the school façade and stand guard, as it were, around the circular classroom.
